Desjardins 6 HP Restoration Details
Restored by Joe Kelley, completed June 2005
Two engines were purchased in April 2004 in Stanstead (Rock Island), PQ. from Ken Meeks. The engines were missing various parts, but one had a good block with original paint and was a good candidate for restoration, the other block had some freeze crack damage, which would have required that the cylinder be repaired, then bored and sleeved. The flywheels and hopper were swapped from the other parts engine as they had original paint. The babbitt on the cam shaft side was filed off to fit the crankshaft journal. A sub-base was located and purchased as neither of the engines were mounted on one. This engine has a 5-1/2" bore x 10" stroke. Flywheel face width is 3 and the diameter is 33. The engine was not stuck, making removal of the piston easy. The bore was standard, therefore only a slight clean up hone was done to the cylinder. The piston ring grooves were re machined (squared), and 4 standard rings 5 x were ordered. A new wrist pin was made. The wrist pin end of the connecting rod had been brazed at some point in its' life, therefore a new connecting rod was located, which looks to be NOS. This was supplied with a new split bronze bushing, shims and bolts. The rod bearing babbitt had to be filed down, to fit the crank journal. During its former life the head had a slight freeze crack, this was vee'd out and welded. The exhaust valve guide was broken off, so a new guide was fabricated and installed. The intake valve guide was sleeved with a new one. New intake and exhaust valves were custom fitted, ground and lapped in. New valve springs were fabricated. The clutch pulley was removed, cleaned and freed up. A new handle was fabricated. The entire clutch pulley assembly was re-installed, adjusted and functions properly. Five major cast iron castings were missing on this engine: Rocker arm, rocker arm bracket, crank guard and gas tank bracket. These were re-cast from the original factory patterns. The governor gear guard and sub-base were purchased at a show. Here is a list of the missing parts that were either purchased or made: Webster magneto, ignitor bracket, magneto trip rod mechanism, oiler, grease cups, muffler (original Desjardins), misc pipe fittings, fasteners, decompression valve and wood skids. Exhaust valve adjuster, governor rod, fuel line and bracket, misc pins, gas tank, head gasket, fuel needle assembly, gas tank bracket support, governor gear, main bearing shims. The original lettering on both sides of the hopper was illegible. New self-adhesive stencils were made up and the lettering was re-painted.
Thank you to the following individuals and companies who were involved in this project, for providing technical advice, machining, and material. As you can imagine there were countless hours spent on this project! BUT, it runs... and that is the whole purpose of this hobby!
Technical Team: Jim Goupee, Dave Huling, Skip Woodworth, Ben Albert, Warren Chatto
Materials: Oneida Foundry, Otto Gas Engine Works, O & R Lumbra, Otto Sideshaft, Charlie Alton, Essex Brass, Maine Signs
FYI: This engine displaces 238 cubic inches! How does that compare to your vehicle?
