Desjardins 10HP Restoration Details
Restored by Joe Kelley, completed 2007
This engine was purchased in August 2004 at the Pageant of Steam in Canandaigua, NY. The engine was missing a few parts, but was a good candidate for restoration. This engine has a 6-1/2" bore x 12" stroke. Flywheel face width is 3 and the diameter is 38. The engine had a stuck piston. The hopper, flywheels and crankshaft were removed to facilitate removal of the stuck piston. After the stuck piston was removed it was determined that the crankshaft was slightly bent and that it should be straightened. The flywheels were removed and the keys were discarded, one key was broken. The crankshaft was straightened, the rod journal was found to have wear and taper. This was polished at a local machine shop. The flywheels were re-installed on the crankshaft with new gib keys fitted. A broken main bearing cap stud was drilled out and a new stud installed. A belt pulley was installed. The hopper was gasketed and installed with new fasteners. After attempting to remove the rings from the piston and having to break them out, new rings were ordered. The ring grooves were machined square and the rings installed. A new wrist pin and bronze bushing were machined. At some point the engine's original connecting rod and the rear portion of the cylinder were damaged, this was smoothed over with JB Weld and "antiqued". A NOS connecting rod and end cap was purchased, babbited and machined to fit the polished crankshaft journal. The cylinder was honed slightly to remove any corrosion. The new connecting rod assembly and original piston with new rings was installed in the cylinder. A new head bolt was installed after drilling out the broken one and re-tapping the hole. The remaining head bolt threads were cleaned up and chased with a die. New exhaust and intake valves, were machined to size. New valve guides were machined and installed. New valve springs were made. The exhaust port on the head was broken out and a new nipple assembly was fabricated and welded in place. The original rocker arm and bracket were re-installed. A new cast iron muffler was purchased and installed with a new elbow. A new oiler was installed. A new governor gear was machined to fit the governor yoke. The original pushrod assembly was re-installed on the engine. A new magneto trip assembly was purchased as this was missing. A replacement Webster magneto was located as the original was missing. The original ignitor bracket was intact and unbroken. This was cleaned up and a new set of points installed. The original gas tank bracket was broken and was welded and re-installed on the engine with a new support bracket. A new gas tank was installed and a new fuel line, pickup tube with check valve made up. The needle valve and seat were missing so a new assembly was machined and installed in the carburetor. The bottom portion of the skids were replaced with new wood. The remaining wood is original to the engine. The engine's paint and striping is reasonably intact, so it was decided to leave it alone. The original stencils on the hopper were touched up as they were illegible. Brian Domney of Saskatchewan sent his original crankshaft guard to Tomahawk Foundry so that I could have one cast for this engine and one for the 12hp also. This was painted (antiqued) to match the original factory paint.
