GILSON Johnny-On-The-Spot.

This copy of a 1913 advertisement page leads to believe that the Johnny-On-The-Spot engines were first introduced on June 1st., 1913.

Port Washington "Johnny-On-The-Spot" (1913-1916).

Guelph "Johnny-On-The-Spot" (1913-1916).

Guelph "Johnny-On-The-Spot" (1917-1930).

Gilson
All Gilson "Johnny-On-The-Spot" engines built in Port Washington Wis. were rated at 1-1/2hp. The lowest serial number I found is 127 and the highest is 2898. I thing it is safe to say that just a little under 3000 Johnny-On-The-Spot were built in Port Washington from 1913 to 1916.

Here is another name tag found on Port Washington built Johnny-On-The-Spot engines.

Gilson
At the same time in 1913 at the Gilson foundry in Guelph, Ontario, Canada they were making Johnny-On-The-Spot engines identical in design and color and the ones built in Port Washington. The engines built in Guelph had a cast brass name tag and a different block of serial numbers. The first serial number on a 1913 Johnny-On-The-Spot more than likely would have been 51001.

Gilson
In about 1917 Gilson introduced a larger JOTS. It was rated at 2-1/4hp. and was sometimes referred to as the Johnny-On-The-Spot "SENIOR".

Gilson
Also in around 1917 the JOTS was rated upwards from 1-1/2hp to 1-3/4hp. and continued to be built in Guelph until about 1930 when Gilson ceased to built engines.

Either Gilson ran out of name tags to put on their Johnny-On-The-Spot engines or to save a few pennies, but for a few years in the 52000 serial number range, no name tags were put on their engines, but instead they simply stamped the serial number directly on the sheet metal crankguard and also on occassions on the face of the flywheel.

Gilson
Sometimes in the late twenties the Gilson Johnny-On-The-Spot sheet metal crank guard was replaced with a cast iron crank guard which boasted an all new brass name plate. This type of tag all have serial numbers in the 54000+ number range.

Gilson
It is evident from this name tag that the Johnny-On-The-Spot Senior, which was first introduced at 2-1/4hp is now rated at 2-1/2hp.

Gilson
All JOTS built in Guelph (1-1/2hp., 1-3/4hp., 2-1/4., and 2-1/2hp.,) all shared the same block of serial numbers. The highest serial number found is 54888 which indicates a total production of Johnny-On-The-Spot built in Guelph to be just shy of 4000 engines.
