There is plenty of original red paint left on this Style D Gilson. The muffler on the engine is NOT original equipment.
Style D.
It appears to me that this 2hp Style D is identical in every respect to the 1-1/2hp Style E air cooled engines; the only difference being the water hopper/cylinder being replace from the cylinder and fins. Of interest is that all the parts on this Style "D" have an "E" as a prefix to all the parts numbers. Only one exception, the part number on the cylinder/hopper is "D 3". Even the head on this Style D has provisions to bolt on the bracket for the cooling fan.

Style D.
The words "Gilson Mfg. Co., Port Washington, Wis."
are cast on the push rod part # E 15.
.
Style D.
Like for the Style "E", it appears that the Style "D" never came with a crankshaft guard.
Style D.
The cart and wooden battery box appears to be original equipment.

Style D.
Part # "D3" is present at the foot of the drip oiler. Other parts numbers are E2 on the main bearings,E3 on the rod bearing, E5 on the connecting rod E15 on the push rod, E22 on the governor's weights and E26 on the exhaust valve rocker arm.
Style D.
The words "Made By Gilson Mfg. Co., Port Washington, Wis."
are cast on the engine's base.
Style D.
Part # E26 clearly visible on exhaust valve rocker arm.
Style D.
From this picture one could not tell if he was looking at a Style E or at a Style D.
Style D.
A casting date 7-1-11 (July 1, 1911) can be seen on the side of the water hopper.
Style D.
A peek inside the water hopper reveals the presence of bolts, indicating the the water hopper and cylinder were cast in two parts.
