This is a water hopper cooled Gilson engine. Its cast brass tag indicates
that it was built in Port Washington, the serial number is 631 and it is a
3 horsepower engine. It has smooth hopper sides (no name cast there) and
it seems it never came with a sheet metal guard over the crankshaft.
An early Gilson catalog (G-3) shows the Gilson Style "D" as being built
in the 2 and 3 hp sizes only. A latter Gilson catalog (G-7) shows the
Gilson Style "D" as being made in the 2, 3-1/2, 4-1/2 and 6hp sizes.
The Style "D" was built in the same general lines as the Style "E" air
cooled, with the only difference that it is equipped with a water jacket
and hopper instead of the flanged cylinder and fan of the Style "E" air cool Gilson.
