This other early Gilson Style "E" belongs to Richard Kees from New Zealand. Unfortunately the name tag has been removed from the engine and lost. The serial number 1458 is stamped on the end of the crankshaft. Many parts on the engine have the letter "E" cast on them, revealing that this Gilson is an air cool Style "E". The cylinder bore measures at 3-3/4 inches, the stroke is 4 inches and the flywheels are 15-1/2 inches in diameter. These measurements are consistent with the data of an early Gilson catalog (G-3) for a 1 horsepower air cool engine. Of special interest is the cooling fan which only came as an option on the 1 HP. Also, the name Gilson is not cast on the base of this air cooled Gilson which seems to be consistant with other early engines. On higher serial # engines, the name "GILSON" and "Port Washington" is cast on the base.
Serial # 1458 stamped on the end of the crankshaft.
Style "E" --- H.P. 1 --- No. 1458

Style "E", 1hp air cooled Gilson serial # 2182.

Style "E", 1-1/2hp air cooled Gilson serial # 3461.
Cast in "raised letters" on the cylinder's base underneath
the head, are the words: "Made by, GILSON, Port Washington, Wis.
The front of the wooden battery box still features the name
"GOES LIKE SIXTY" in yellow letterings.
Gilson manufactured a GOES LIKE SIXTY 1-1/2hp. engine in
1907, they also made a 1hp model, and the only difference
was that the 1-1/2hp always came with a cooling fan
while the 1hp did not come with the cooling fan, unless
one was requested as a special order.
This engine is an air cooled, hit & miss Gilson
with battery ignition and mounted on wood skids.
