I traded for this engine last fall, havent had a chance to work on it.
It is stuck big time! The bore is 4-1/2" no tag of course, main caps marked X2L, X2R cylinder head X3, connecting rod X42, pillow blocks X26,
The channel iron is 4-1/2 X 1/2" It is most all there except gas tank .
I found this engine and it still is in central Texas. Here is a picture.
Thanks D. Smith

My Style "X" was originally painted red and has the "ears" on the sides of the water hopper to attach the frame to hold the multiple pulley arrangement. My Gilson does not have the words Gilson and/or Guelph cast on the water hopper. I think that the Gilson engines that came out of Port Washington USA were painted red and did not have the name Gilson cast on the sides of the water hopper. On the other hand, the Gilson engines that came out of Guelph Canada, were painted green and had the name Gilson (and sometimes Gilson Guelph) cast in raised letters on the side of the water hopper.

I once saw a Gilson Adv. saying that all their engines came with high tension jump spark battery ignition which did away with complicated ignitors, springs and working parts etc. but Gilson concluded in saying: "We are, also, prepare to furnish either High or Low tension Ignition when desired". Gilson was not pushing the sale of magnetos for their engines and I've hardly ever seen one.

My 3hp Style "X" Gilson has a 4-1/2 inches bore, 7 inches stroke, the flywheels are 22 inches in diameter and the crank shaft is 1-1/2 inches in diameter.

In later years of production, the "X" was re-rated upwards to 3-1/2hp and had 23 inches flywheels with a 1-5/8 inches crank shaft.

NOTE:
Now for the unsolved part, the ignitor and sparkplug, in which my has, does your Gilson "X" have an ignitor? Could the head on my engine been change at one time, the head looks to be original to the engine. I need the detent latch out block and cam roller, i dont think I would ever be luckey enough to find ignitor and mag bracket as they are made as one piece to replace my broken one. Does your Gilson have "Gilson Guelph" stamp on both side of water hopper ? Johnny
